In celebration of Wigton,Cumbria
Wigton is a busy market town in Cumbria situated in  the centre of the Solway Plain, between the Solway Firth and the Caldbeck Fells on the fringes of the Lake District. It is on the A596 road, half way between Carlisle and Maryport. Historically there was originally a Roman fort of Maglona (also known as Old Carlisle), It was situated close by  to the East of the Town, nothing visable above the ground remains except the ariel layout as the stones were used in the buildings of Wigton. it was then chartered in 1262 as a Market town but then attacked and burned by the Scots in 1322.

Wigton retains a charcter all of its own.It has its own railway station with frequent trains to Carlisle or the Lake District Coastline and Barrow in Furnace. A rail rover card can be purchased to explore the beautiful lakeland coastline.   Charles Dickens was reputed to stay in a hotel (sadly no longer open) just round the corner from us with Wilkie Collins as the two made their progress around the North of England and made reference to Wigton in the Short story " The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices (1890)" Close your eyes and imagine the market place as it was !!!

We hope you enjoy some of our photos of Wigton and some of the local ameneties
